Consultant Gastroenterologist specialising in therapeutic endoscopy and colonoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), wireless capsule endoscopy, balloon enteroscopy and general liver disease.

Dr Anderson graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1990. He then underwent higher specialist training at King's College Hospital (Liver Diseases and Intensive Care) and Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital (Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine.) He was awarded a Wellcome Institute Research Fellowship and moved on to conduct full-time research at St Thomas' Hospital. He was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of London in 2004.

As one of the foremost practitioners in his field, Simon set up and leads the wireless capsule endoscopy service and balloon enteroscopy service at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital.

He is actively involved with both under- and post-graduate teaching. He is a Lead Tutor of year-3 and -5 medical students and is an Educational Supervisor of four post-graduates.

Clinical interests in gastroenterology

Dr Anderson’s interests include all therapeutic endoscopy and colonoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), wireless capsule endoscopy, balloon enteroscopy and general liver disease.

Further interests include research into techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of small-intestinal disease and ulcerative colitis. He is also breaking new ground as lead investigator in a trial of a new treatment for Crohn's disease, and is a co- investigator into the genetics of inflammatory bowel disease.

Research interests in gastroenterology

Dr Anderson undertakes research into inflammatory bowel disease and is currently the Principal Investigator on a Crohn’s disease clinical trial. He is also a co-investigator in a study on the genetics of Crohn’s disease.
