An orthopaedic hip and knee surgeon in London  - Specialist in minimally invasive hip replacement operations and knee surgery

John Hollingdale is the Senior Orthopaedic Consultant at the Central Middlesex Hospital where he has worked for the last 17 years.  He is a specialist in hip and knee replacement surgery.

He trained at the Westminster Hospital in London and obtained his MBBS in 1975.  He completed his orthopaedic training at Charing Cross and St. Marys and obtained his FRCS in 1979.  In 1987, he was appointed consultant at the Kettering General Hospital where he worked for 2 years. He returned to London in 1989 to take up the post of Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Central Middlesex Hospital, where he has worked ever since.

He has recently been appointed to the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association and will start work on this in 2007.  He is currently a board member of the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty. (Arthroplasty means the surgical reconstruction or replacement of a  joint).

Minimal access hip and knee replacement

Over the last 15 years he has developed a special interest in reconstruction of the knee and hip.

His particular interests at present include minimally invasive total knee replacement (MIS), a procedure which involves far less soft tissue and muscle damage and allows the patient to mobilise quicker with much less pain and revision surgery of the arthritic knee.

He also performs both cemented and un-cemented hips and is developing experience in the one-incision minimally invasive hip replacement.

His other interests are arthroscopy and reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament.  His preferred techniques are using hamstring grafts which he has found to give good results and also allow patients to undergo rapid rehabilitation.

At present he is involved in clinical research looking into results of minimally invasive knee replacement and is about to embark on further research using surgical navigation in knee replacement surgery.
