Based at University College London Hospitals with a private practice at the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth and consulting rooms at 9 Harley Street, Mr Majid Hashemi is a highly experienced bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgeon with a specialist expertise in laparoscopic weight loss surgery and the surgical treatment of oesophageal reflux and motility problems.

Mr Majid Hashemi MB ChB, FRCS, ECFMG is a Consultant Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London Hospitals. As Lead for Oesophageal and Gastric Surgery and Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer, he provides surgery for the treatment of obesity, assessment and treatment for patients with oesophageal reflux or motility problems including those who require revision surgery, and oesophageal and gastric cancer surgery as part of the Cancer Centre team at UCLH.

Training and experience in upper GI and obesity surgery

Mr Hashemi qualified from Manchester University and trained in London and at Addenbrooke's in Cambridge, as well as other hospitals in East Anglia. Choosing to subspecialise in gastrointestinal surgery, he undertook a 15-month Oesophageal Fellowship with Dr Tom DeMeester at the University of Southern California, USA where he developed an interest and expertise in the treatment and management of oesophageal conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and achalasia.

Following his appointment as Senior Lecturer at University College London and Consultant Surgeon at the Whittington Hospital in 2001, Mr Hashemi was responsible for establishing and leading the bariatric surgery service in North London. At his instigation, this service developed an innovative multidisciplinary (MDT) approach designed to involve patients in the decision-making process based on input from a number of related disciplines.

Mr Majid took up his current position at University College Hospitals in 2007 and to date has performed over 3,000 operations on the stomach and oesophagus. He is skilled in the latest laparoscopic techniques and has taken part in advanced laparoscopic training workshops for laparoscopic and bariatric procedures, both in the UK and abroad.

Mr Majid has a special interest and expertise in laparoscopic bariatric surgery and anti-reflux surgery. He is of the firm belief that the patient should always be at the heart of the decision-making process and is committed to providing informed, personalised care based on the latest scientific evidence and his own extensive experience.

Mr Hashemi is now offering a pioneering treatment for bad reflux in patients who have had sleeve gastrectomy. Having performed the first laparoscopic Linx implant in London in 2010, he is now able to perform the Linx implant for patients after receiving sleeve gastrectomy.

Research interests

Mr Majid was Surgical Tutor and Academic Lead for Surgery at the Whittington and Archway Campus from 2001-2007 and Chair of the Surgery Module Management Group for undergraduate studies for University College London Medical School from 2007-2010.

He continues to play an active role in training, education and research, both leading and supervising research projects that have resulted in publications in peer reviewed journals.
