Thoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of diseases affecting organs inside the thorax (the chest) excluding the heart. Generally speaking, this involves treatment of conditions of the lungs, chest wall, esophagus and diaphragm.
Thoracic surgery is often grouped with cardiac surgery and called cardiothoracic surgery.
The professional body in the UK which represents thoracic surgeons and supervises the training of thoracic surgeons is the Royal College of Surgeons. There is also the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland.
