Experienced prostate cancer specialist who has undertaken more than 1,300 procedures. Mr Doherty specialises in nerve-sparing prostatectomy and laparoscopic techniques to reduce side-effects and complications from surgery.
Mr Alan Doherty completed his undergraduate training at The Middlesex Hospital before undergoing his surgical training at the Royal Marsden and Charing Cross hospitals in London. Mr Doherty also studied at The Institute of Urology before taking up his position as a Consultant Urologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 2001, a large tertiary referral centre. He is one of the most experienced surgeons in prostatectomy within the UK, having undertaken a total of more than 1,300 procedures.
Mr Doherty was one of the first surgeons to carry out prostatectomy as a laparoscopic procedure. He has now completed 600 laparoscopic prostatectomies and is highly experienced in nerve-sparing techniques.
Mr Doherty’s commitment to using minimally invasive techniques where appropriate includes all major specialties in urological surgery, including laparoscopic cystectomy (bladder removal) and laparoscopic nephrectomy (kidney removal), both of which are only performed by a small number of UK surgeons.
