What does an osteopath do?
Osteopathy is a recognised system of diagnosis and treatment that focuses on hands-on manipulation of the body’s musculo-skeletal system in order to treat a wide variety of ailments. Osteopathy involves the mechanical and functional evaluation of the patient, and treatment is tailored according to each patient's specific problem.
Osteopathic treatment aims to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes, and ultimately promote healthy movement in joints, muscles and tendons, and to correct mechanical imbalances. Osteopathy aims to resolve the root cause of the problem, not just to cure the symptoms.
Regulation of private osteopaths
Major osteopathic organisations include the Osteopathic International Alliance (OIA), General Osteopathic Council, and
The World Osteopathic Health Organisation (WOHO).
