Eye surgery and ophthalmic treatment available in London
The London Eye Hospital is now able to offer you the next generation of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL’s) – the trifocal. This implant gives patients a better chance to enjoy clear vision at all distances with maintained contrast sensitivity and lower visual disturbance.
The older generation multifocal lenses offer clear distance and near vision, however they are least clear for intermediate vision and can result in glare and haloes especially with night driving. The trifocal implant has the advantage of offering clear intermediate as well as distance and near vision with minimal glare and haloes at night.
This lens enables patients to switch naturally between all distances. Studies have shown superior performance of the trifocal lenses for intermediate vision and overall image quality.
The only lens which can be adjusted after surgery to give you the best vision possible
The London Eye Hospital is a world centre of Light Adjustable lens surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens is probably the greatest leap forward in lens implant technology since the first implant was used 60 years ago. It is simply the most technologically advanced solution for each individual eye without glasses.
Mr Bobby Qureshi at The London Eye Hospital implants the lens as a day case procedure, using a micro-incision surgical technique where no stitches are required. Mr Bobby Qureshi is one of the most experienced Light Adjustable Lens surgeons in the world.
Am I suitable for LAL?
-
Do you have difficulty reading or seeing things close up?
-
Do you have difficulty seeing while driving?
-
Does your glasses prescription change frequently?
-
Do you wear bifocal or varifocal glasses?
-
Do your glasses get in the way of your daily activities?
-
Have you had previous laser eye surgery and now have any of the above?
-
Have you been told that you have a cataract?
If you can answer ‘yes’ to any of the above, you may have presbyopia or cataracts or both. This also means that your vision is affecting your lifestyle and you may be a candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens.
The only lens which expands and contracts like our natural lens to give a seamless change in focus from near to far and everywhere in-between
The Synchrony accommodating implant allows patients to see well at all distances which means near, intermediate and far without glasses or contact lenses. It is the only implant in the world that expands and contracts naturally to give a continuous change in focus without compromising the quality of vision – just like our natural lens when we are young.
The London Eye Hospital is the UK's leading centre for multifocal implants with their surgeons having implanted over 10,000 lenses of various designs.
Your eye contains a small lens. In a young normal eye this lens focuses the light entering the eye onto the retina and we can see near, intermediate, and in the distance. As we age the lens begins to harden and loses the ability to focus from near to intermediate to distance and back again. This is known as presbyopia and begins around the age of 40. This can be corrected to give freedom from glasses or contact lenses which will last forever.
As the natural lens in the eye ages further it starts to become cloudy and brown in colour, preventing the passage of light and causing colours to lose their brilliance. This is a cataract. At first frequent changes in your prescription can help, but left untreated cataracts can eventually lead to blindness. The London Eye Hospital utilises the safest and most advanced technology in existence for cataract surgery combined with the latest pioneering lens implants to simply give the best result.
What if I have already had cataract surgery?
Many people who have already had cataract surgery will be enjoying their improved vision, especially for distance, but will still be using reading glasses or varifocals for near and intermediate vision. A simple operation can produce a much greater freedom from glasses.
At the centre of the retina is an area called the macula. It is the most sensitive part of the retina and is responsible for detailed colour vision. AMD is a degenerative condition of the macula associated with getting older.
Other eye surgery and treatments available at the The London Eye Hospital include Laser Eye Surgery, Corneal Transplantation, Blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), Glaucoma Treatment, Retinal Surgery and Complex Reconstructive Surgery.
