The London Clinic: Laser ablation therapy in London
The London Clinic is a fully equipped acute general hospital that offers extensive expertise in treating varicose veins.
Dr Jocelyn Brookes, Interventional Radiologist, is coordinating the ELVeS programme at the London Clinic.
The EndoLaser Vein System (ELVeS) was FDA-approved in 2002 and is CE-marked but it is new to the UK. Following the recommendations of the NICE guidelines of March 2004. this form of treatment of varicose veins is being introduced under trial conditions at the London Clinic with the support of the private health insurance companies.
Laser ablation treatment of varicose veins is carried out under local anaesthesia and takes less than one hour. The patient can stand and walk at the end of the treatment. Wearing a compression stocking for a week following the treatment, the patient can return to normal daily activities and work, almost immediately.
The reported success rate is 97% in an analysis of over 2000 patients treated.
Patients avoid the risks and complications associated with general anesthesia, hospitalisation and surgical complications.
